Well, first off I learned the hard way about the importance of proper bug repellent when going into gardens and hiking around. The mosquitos are in full force and it certainly doesn't help being located so close to a lake. If you're not really into covering your whole body in DEET than try applying essential oils like eucalyptus, citronella, lavender, and chamomile to your clothes and skin several times throughout the day and put a basil plant near your bed to ward them off at night.
Secondly, a pair of gardening gloves (preferably with a hint of style) could be a lifesaver! Don't get me wrong, being one with the Earth is great but digging in the soil all day could cause havoc on your hands.
Finally, plan ahead and choose what you would like to harvest in the upcoming season.
